Top International Fertility Destination in Cyprus
Sperm donation is an excellent option for couples that are experiencing male infertility issues — varicoceles, low sperm count or low sperm motility.
Donor sperm is also an excellent option for single women or gay couples who wish to build a family. Some individuals may have a sperm donor who has agreed to donate while others choose an anonymous donor.
If an anonymous donor is chosen, many sperm banks will offer information about the donor similar to the information that is provided to egg donor recipients. Adalia IVF can also provide an anonymous fresh sperm donor.
Once the donor sperm has been prepared, fertilization can occur via artificial insemination procedures including: intracervical insemination (ICI) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), and assisted reproductive technology procedures such as; intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Sperm Donation Treatment Procedure
In the sperm donation process the donor enters a private room and produces a semen sample into a sterile container. The sperm is then frozen in liquid nitrogen at -320 degrees Fahrenheit in a process known as sperm cryopreservation. It remains frozen until needed.
Surgical Sperm Retrieval
Surgical sperm retrieval is an option for men with an absence of sperm or blockage of the tube (vas deferens) or non-obstructive azoospermia.
Sperm can be collected directly from the epididymis situated inside the scrotum (the pouch holding the testicles) where sperm are stored and mature, using a fine needle and syringe. This is known as ‘percutaneous epidydimal sperm aspiration or PESA.
Sperm can also be retrieved from the testicles, a process known as ‘testicular sperm extraction’ or TESA. Surgical sperm retrieval is timed to coincide with the egg collection procedure. If enough sperm is retrieved it may be possible to freeze some for use at a later stage. The sperm collected is then used to inject the eggs using ICSI.
Donor Sperm Insemination
Artificial insemination with donor sperm has been used as an infertility treatment since the early 1900s. The procedure provides a safe, efficient way to produce conception when male infertility occurs. In the insemination process the woman’s menstrual cycle is closely monitored. When an egg is released, the donor sperm is brought out of cryopreservation, brought to viability, and placed into the woman’s uterus where fertilization of an egg usually takes place.
Depending on individual circumstances the insemination process may follow the initial IVF steps where tests and follicle stimulation medication is necessary. The donor sperm is inserted in the uterus when the eggs are ready. Recent refinements and advances in sperm donation technology have greatly improved this techniques ability to achieve conception.
IVF with Sperm Donation
The Sperm Donation treatment process will follow the steps of our IVF with ICSI treatment. You will select your sperm donor from a Sperm Bank of which we will provide the details or if preferred We will source a fresh donor for you here in Cyprus.
Sperm Donor Candidates
While sperm donation may seem like a simple endeavor, it is a very meticulous process. About 5% of applicants are accepted to donate sperm. Candidates are immediately disqualified include intravenous drug use, homosexual contact and the presence of certain diseases, such as cystic fibrosis in the applicant’s medical history.

- Screening for medical and sexual history
- Testing for genetic and other diseases
- Analysis of their sperm count and motility
- Investigation of a number of other factors
- Day 13 – Egg collection
- Day 16 – 3 day embryo transfer OR
- Day 18 – 5 day embryo transfer
